Short Term Counseling.

Your EAP benefit includes up to six sessions of short term counseling for those eligible for the program. These sessions may be used for individual counseling, couples counseling, or counseling involving some combination of family members. Sometimes people just need some time and space to sort through an issue, or decide what they want to do about a certain event that has occurred. Short term counseling is often an effective way to sort things out. Sometimes, a counselor will supplement the short term counseling with reading recommendations, referrals to an HRD class, or other learning opportunity that supports their journey toward clarity. Short term counseling can be effective in addressing mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression. It can also be a vehicle to explore any life event, workplace issue, or other personal circumstance you may be facing.

Many people complete individual short-term counseling at the EAP feeling that their concerns were reasonably resolved, while others may have had a sufficiently positive and productive counseling experience that they wish to continue counseling with another therapist in the community. If you are interested in addressing concerns more fully following the termination of short-term counseling, you may request appropriate community referrals from your EAP counselor. Your counselor will work closely with you to identify the most appropriate referrals given your circumstances, personal resources, and individual needs.

Occasionally, a person is referred to the EAP by either a union representative or a supervisor as part of a disciplinary process. Regardless as to how a person is referred to the EAP, it the position of the staff that the counseling services are voluntary. The EAP maintains a position of neutrality in regards to employee-employer relations. The sole focus of the EAP counselor is to provide active support to the individual employee involved as they seek to regain their personal balance and improve their mental health status.
